A heavily armed attack on Copts living in El-Zawoia El-Hamra district resulted in the murder of one priest, burning-alive 23 families and destruction of tens of pharmacies and merchant stores owned by Copts.

Civil and sectarian unrest erupted after rumors and accusations by members of El-Gama’a Al-Islamia, that Christians burned Quotb masque in the city of Sohag. They enticed Moslems to burn St. Mary Church which is adjacent to the masque in question.

The murder of 8 Copts. No one arrested by the police.

April 23, 1997

El-Minya

The murder of 2 Copts, one of which is a policeman. No one arrested by the police.

August, 1998

El-Kosheh

Sohag - Province

The murder of 2 Coptic youths in a homicide case and the wounding of 2 other Copts, was dramatically evolved into a sectarian attack on Copts in the village. It resulted in the arrest and torture of almost 1200 Coptic children, women, elders and men on the hands of the local police authorities, prevent charges on the Moslems perpetrators of the gruesome homicide of the 2 Copts.

January 2000

El-Kosheh

Sohag - Province

The murder of 21 Copts and the destruction of ten’s of store shops were completely destroyed, as a result of an random and armed raid on Copts. There were ten’s of wounded Copts as a result of this attack. The killers got two years jail term and are now FREE.
