Merkel thanks Egyptian architect after opening Europe's largest railway station

German Chancellor Angela Merkel thanked Friday May 26th Egyptian architect Hani Azer and his crew for their painstaking efforts to construct Europe's largest railway station in the German capital Berlin.

In a ceremony inaugurating the glass-covered five-storey station, Merkel said the building is a symbol linking the West to the East.

The opening of the landmark station came in time for the World Cup soccer tournament, which will kick off after two weeks.

The station cost €700 million and more than, 1,100 trains will pass through each day and 300,000 passengers are expected to get on or off at Europe's rail crossing hub.
